Dental Implants Q&A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small titanium posts used to replace your natural tooth roots. Your provider at Conte Dentistry places the implant into your jawbone at the site of your missing tooth to hold your replacement teeth securely in place. Once placed, implants can secure a dental crown, bridge, partial dentures, or complete dentures.

How do dental implants work?

It can take several visits to create your individualized dental implant plan. Through X-rays and other imaging scans, the team determines where to place your implants for the best support.

Placing dental implants requires a certain amount of healthy jawbone. Without enough tooth-supporting bone, the implant won’t bond to your jaw and can even fall out. To ensure you have enough bone in your jaw, the team may recommend a bone graft before the implant procedure.

Once the team places the implant, it bonds to the jaw as your mouth heals. This is called osseointegration. Your replacement tooth then attaches to the implant.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

There are many advantages of dental implants over less permanent solutions, such as a dental bridge or dentures, including:

Unlike dentures, which sit on top of your gums, dental implants connect to your jawbone. Once your mouth heals, you may not even notice them. They won’t irritate or rub up against your gums like full dentures.

Because the team places dental implants into your jawbone, you never have to take them out for cleaning. You can care for them just as you would your natural teeth with regular brushing and flossing.

Dentures and dental bridges typically need replacement after 5-10 years. Implants, on the other hand, can last for 25 years or more.

Many people never need to replace their dental implants. However, if you do have problems with your replacement tooth or the implant itself, the team at Conte Dentistry performs dental implant restoration to preserve your implant.

Dental implants look and feel just like your natural teeth, so you can smile, speak, and laugh with confidence.

Many people with dental implants also have an easier time speaking and chewing comfortably than they do with traditional dentures or a bridge.

What happens during the dental implant process?

Once the team creates your personalized implant plan, you’ll come into the office for your procedure. With anesthesia, you should feel comfortable throughout the entire procedure.

Your mouth must fully heal before your next appointment. This typically takes between six and 12 weeks. When you return to the office, the team takes impressions of your mouth to create your new replacement tooth or teeth.

At your final visit, they connect the exposed portion of your dental implant to your artificial tooth for a fully restored smile.
